Background
Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and related Dementias are currently the Seventh (7th) most common cause of Death Worldwide. They represent a major global health concern, and projections indicate they will affect more than 100 million people by 2050.
- It has been estimated that by 2050, a five-year delay in the onset of AD could reduce the prevalence and cost of this disease by 50%, greatly reducing the burden on patients, families, and the health care system.
- However, there is currently no cure or effective therapy, and those that exist only control the symptoms, without stopping, slowing, or reducing the disease itself.
- Therefore, to address this overwhelming health burden, researchers are exploring Lifestyle Factors as possible ways to mitigate the Cognitive Decline associated with AD.
- During this exploration, Lifestyle Interventions (Diet and Nutrition) have been highlighted for their importance as a low-cost, low-risk alternative, which could significantly alter the course of the disease.
- This led researchers to accelerate research into Neuroprotective Diets to try to reduce the devastating effects of Alzheimer's Disease.
- The Mediterranean (Medi), DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), and MIND (Mediterranean Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay) diets have been shown to have Biological Mechanisms to support the attributed Neuroprotective Benefits.
